I actually slept in on day 5 because it was the day of a
family picnic and my first trip to downtown Calgary to a park called Prince's
Island Park. I was looking forward
to seeing this oasis of nature in the concrete jungle of high rises and
traffic, even though, according to my
research it was probably going to be my least birding day of the trip. On the ride to town I saw a few Red-tailed Hawks perching on street
lamps. I also saw a purpose built
structure that housed an Osprey’s nest. On
one such structure, close to the highway, I saw a parent with a juvenile in the
nest.

There were lots of people in the park, Calgarians really
love being outdoors. The park was full
of beautiful blooming flowers and trees.
The river, which surrounded the park was teeming with birds, Ringed-billed
Gulls, Mallards and even Canada Geese.
Sandpipers, mainly Spotted Sandpipers, was feeding along the banks of
the river. I did not see many birds in
the trees, just a solitary Red-breasted Nuthatches and a few Yellow-rumped
Warblers. Of course the ubiquitous
Magpies and Crows were there.
This was the least birding day thus far, seeing just 1 new
species for the trip, ironically a Rock Pigeon, and no lifers.
