Bird Trip to Calgary Alberta – Preparation

My preparation for this trip began months before my traveling date.  I started by investigating the hot spots on ebird.org that were close to the area where I would have been staying, the Fish Creek area.  I then started looking at the field guides in my library and found that Sibs (Sibley’s ) was the best choice.  Later, I picked up a copy of Birds of Canada after being unable to find a copy of The Birds of Calgary.  My next stop was to find a guide, someone familiar with the birding locations in the area.  I finally settled on a young birder and blogger, Gavin McKinnon.  I also found the blog Bird Calgary to be very helpful.

Must See Birds

  • Bald Eagle
  • Blue Jay

Resources:

  • Field Guides

My Gear:

  • Canon PowerShot SX30 IS (yes a Point and shoot)
  • Nikon Monarchs 10x42 binoculars
  • Canon 5d Mark II with an 85mm,
  • Monopole
My trip started on July 31st on WestJet Disney team Boeing 737-800.  I boarded the flight at 2:45pm for the 5 hrs 42m  flight to Toronto Pearson International Airport, arriving at 8pm.  Then took another almost 5 hrs flight to Calgary arriving at 12:30am on August 1st.  Calgary was 2 hours behind the time in Barbados and Toronto.
The next few posts to follow will detail my birding excursions.  My lifers are bolded in the day list that will be at the end of each post.
